I have to challenge myself to pay attention to what I am paying attention to.
This challenge is to combat what takes so many forms in my life that I have to work to disrupt it. The non-attention, automatic and frequent out of body thinking. You know the times when your brain detaches itself from your body to stay in a conversation that your body walked away from. Meanwhile, your body does you the favor of kindly and brainlessly driving your car because your mind is still stuck in some other part of the world. You know this has happened when you stop moving and your brain automatically snaps back to your body and asks, How did I get here?
So I am going to give you my best coaching tip ever.
Notice that.
Notice what’s going on in you.
Notice what you see.
Pay attention to it.
Look at it.
Stare at it.
Notice that.
It is a great phrase to coach yourself and others with because often our vision is too clouded, to murky to notice what is smack dab in front of us.
1 Peter 4:8 in the Message says it well.
Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.
True. Gracious. Beautiful. Where are you noticing that?
I appreciate this simple and clear phrase. Easy to remember and packed full of power. Do something. Notice. Thanks for another nugget of wisdom:)
