On our one year anniversary, I decided to surprise Gary. He was working a very stressful job. No matter how many hours he put in there was always a big problem and a big headache. So I made some arrangements and showed up at work with his suitcase in the trunk and invited him to lunch. That was the “sucker” surprise but when the car kept going north he sort of realized that the BIG surprise was “hi-jacking” him.
He was…not…happy. He was moaning and groaning about the work he was immersed in. He was flustered that he was yanked out of his miserable job in the afternoon. I could sense his frustration and honestly, mine, mount as I saw this nifty little get away evaporate in front of me. We still had nine kids at home and I had researched and arranged this one night runaway plan!
Okay I said. We can stop this right now. We can turn back, no harm, no foul, and you can go back to work.
That got him thinking. Hmm, is my work more important than my marriage?
That was an obvious no.
He stuck with it and with several more miles down the road he started to relax his grip and give in to the idea.
We had a great little time during our runaway night. He did leave that job but he hasn’t left me so I think he made a good decision that day to give into a surprise he at first didn’t really think he really wanted.
