When even the cat gets in the way

I began to notice back pain a few years ago where previously there had been none. Chiropractic visits helped tremendously but it finally resolved when I figured out the obvious. I was sitting too many hours hunched over my computer. Way too many!

Of course, I did my research! Did you know that when muscles don’t contract, they require less fuel and the surplus in the form of blood sugar, accumulates in the bloodstream contributing to diabetes risk and other health concerns? Another discovery is that two hours of sitting negates 20 minutes of exercise. In the words of Hamilton, rise up! I took heed.

This problem would be solved by a standing desk! Because what can’t be solved by Amazon Prime?

Here is the product picture. Notice the laptop location and the sparkling sparseness of it all.

Here is a picture of my standing desk in my bedroom. Maybe you are having a hard time finding the standing desk? Well if you can locate it, notice the laptop location. What? Not there? Let’s continue looking for a solution since I find my standing desk so useful for other non-standing projects.

I have another solution I use as a backup. Because after all flexibility is important in the pursuit of goals. I use a Staples Paper Box. This actually works really well until the top of the box starts to indent with the weight of laptop and accompanying papers.

Here is a picture of that solution.

Wait, what? You don’t see my laptop on my DIY standing desk either?  You do see the cat who discovered this standing desk solution was also the prime landscape where the fan oscillates at its finest.

I moved my laptop and starting sitting since wrestling with the cat wasn’t on my to-do list today but writing the blog post was. When I switch-tasked to reading my online class on more time and energy, I read my students’ work and saw their posts related to the hazards of sitting, I could not let the cat win this one. So came up with my 3rd solution!!

HERE IT IS!!! The final solution! Dinner will just have to wait!

What gets in your way of making progress on a goal or habit? Not your cat too? You can overcome! Let me hear it!

  1. Oh my gosh, Mary! This is HILARIOUS!!!! I could hear your voice telling this entire story. I love the pictures, too. I’m looking for a standing desk, but haven’t yet taken the plunge. I predict – it will be the new favorite hangout spot for our TWO cats! Thank you so much!

I love your post, Mary. So much wisdom and humour.
I need to loosen up and make light of situations, like you 💓
O yes! Stretching helps for back pain..

Great solutions! Many forward-thinking doctors say sitting is the new smoking. I try to stand most of the time at work (we have convertible desks that raise and lower at the touch of a button).
